Lent Series: U-Turns Allowed!
We are already in the season of Lent. As I have told you, this season is a season of repentance. It focuses on the sacrifice Jesus made for us to have the opportunity to repent. The word repent literally means turning around, or in the case of Christians to turn God-ward. So, our theme for this year in Lent is U-turns allowed. Have you ever driven down the road and noticed how many places there are that say “No U-turn”? It is especially frustrating when you have missed a turn and gone in the wrong direction. How are you supposed to make the correction if you can’t turn around? How far do you have to go in the wrong direction, knowing you’re going in the wrong direction before you can turn around?
Sometimes in faith and life we miss turns, and go in the wrong direction. But rather than God saying “No U-turns here! Turn around when it is more convenient, or at some other time. Do it later.” Rather, Jesus says, “Now is the time.” Turn around, receive God’s grace, use this gift, and let your life in Him grow. Lent is all about deepening faith, making those corrections in our lives, and most importantly using Jesus’ gift of repentance and grace to do it.
I know that admitting we are wrong or going in the wrong direction is hard. I know that making changes is hard. That is why Lent is full of opportunities to take small steps. Sacrifice something small in life to encourage spiritual discipline. Add something to your life (like scripture reading, prayer, etc.) to help in a change of direction. Use this time for U-turns that will change direction, change habits build faith, and let Jesus grow in you.
